Stevens-Johnson Dyndrome

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome is a rare and serious disorder of the skin and mucous membrane which is usually cause by an reaction to a medication or an infection. It is a emergency case and needs treatment that requires hospitalization. Treatment regimen focuses on controlling symptoms and minimizing complications.

Symptoms:

  • Hives
  • Facial swelling
  • Tongue swelling
  • Red or purple skin rash 
  • Shedding of the skin
  • Blisters on the skin or mucous membrane of the nose, mouth, eyes and genitals
  • Fever
  • Body weakness
  • Sore mouth or throat
Causes:
  • Medications such as: anti-gout medications (allopurinol); Acetaminophen, ibuprofen and naproxen sodium; Antibiotics like penicillin; Antipsychotics and anticonvulsants; Radition theraphy
  • Infections such as Pneumonia; HIV; Herpes or Hepatitis
Complications:
  • Permanent skin damage
  • Eye problems and internal organs
  • cellulitis
  • Blood infection or sepsis
