Guidelines for Restraining A Client or Patient


  • Should have written doctor's order.
  • The specific indications should be clearly documented.
  • Anyone impaired enough to require restraints should have continuous staff observation.
  • Restraints are used when there is not a less restrictive alternative.
  • Restraints should be properly used and designed.
  • Five staff members are necessary to restrain a resistant client.
  • Security should be called to assist.
  • During the procedure, the client should be told in calm, simple terms, what is happening.
  • Nursing and security staff should receive training in this procedure on a regular basis.
  • Should have proper protocol.
  • Supervise client on hydration, elimination and feeding while on restraint.
