- Should have written doctor's order.
- The specific indications should be clearly documented.
- Anyone impaired enough to require restraints should have continuous staff observation.
- Restraints are used when there is not a less restrictive alternative.
- Restraints should be properly used and designed.
- Five staff members are necessary to restrain a resistant client.
- Security should be called to assist.
- During the procedure, the client should be told in calm, simple terms, what is happening.
- Nursing and security staff should receive training in this procedure on a regular basis.
- Should have proper protocol.
- Supervise client on hydration, elimination and feeding while on restraint.
