COMMON PROBLEMS IN BREASTFEEDING


  • SORE / CRACKED NIPPLES
  1. Check position and latch of the baby
  2. Continue breastfeeding baby as much as can be tolerated
  3. If breastfeeding baby is intolerable, rest for 1-3 feedings but make sure to express milk manually or through a pump during feeding times to ensure continuous production of your breastmilk
  4. Apply/ smear your breastmilk over affected areas and air dry for 10 to 15 ins at least twice a day.
  5. Wash nipples only with water. 
  6. Do not use soap as this will dry the nipples further.

  • ENGORGEMENT - is caused by the build-up of milk that makes your breast big and hard. To relieve discomfort, you must do the following:
  1. Breastfeed baby more often and on demand.
  2. Make sure the mother is relaxed. Stress and tension can make the situation worsens.
  3. You may express your milk manually to ease engorgement.
  4. Warm compress and gentle massage may also help.

  • MASTITIS - is an inflammation of the breast commonly caused by bacteria. This mat sometimes be accompanied by  fever, headache and body aches. Here are some tips to help you:
  1.  Do not massage the breast to avoid spreading the infection.
  2. Seek professional help. See the doctor immediately for medication treatment. 
  3. You may still breastfeed on the other breast that is not infected during treatment.
