DSM-IV-TR Criteria for Dysthymia


  1. Depressed mood for most of the day during a 2 year period (1 year for children and adolescents), presence of depressed mood. Note: In children or adolescents, mood can be irritable and duration must be at least 1 year.
  2. Symptoms cause clinically significant distress in social, occupational, and other important areas of functioning.
  3. Presence of two or more of the following:
  • Decreased or increased appetite
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia
  • Anergia or chronic fatigue
  • Anhedonia
  • Poor concentration or difficulty making decisions
  • feelings of hopelessness and despair
      4. The symptoms are not related to a major depressive episode, a bipolar disorder, a psychotic disorder, the physiologic effects of any substances, or general medical condition.
