ANTIPSYCHOTIC-INDUCED MOVEMENT DISORDERS
· Extrapyramidal Symptoms – EPS are caused by antipsychotic treatment and need to be monitored/evaluated for early intervention.
Akinesia – rigidity and bradykinesia
Akathisia – restlessness, movement of the body; unable to keep still; movement of feet
Dystonia – spasmodic and painful spasm of muscle (torticollis)
Oculogyric crisis – eyes roll back forward the head (emergency situation)
Pseudoparkinsonism – simulates Parkinson’s disease with shuffling gait, drooling, muscular rigidity and tremor
Rabbit Syndrome – rapid movement of the lips that simulates a rabbit mouth movement.
· Tardive Dyskinesia – a permanent dysfunction of voluntary muscles. Affects the mouth – tongue protrudes, smacking of lips, mouth movements.
Biperidin hydrochloride ( Akiniton) – example of anti-EPS drug
