Rights, Human rights, and patient rights

Right- Rightful claims by persons based on:
-Divine Law
-Natural Law- Right of life
-Constitutional Law- ex. Due process
-Privilege and entitlements

Human Rights- Rightful claims to basic needs by human as humans
Beyond- Human wants
Patient Rights- Rightful claim to basic health needs
Example: primary care and emergency care

Particular patient rights:
1. The right for considerate and respectful care
2. The rights to obtain from his physician complete current information concerning his diagnosis, in language he can understand.
3. The right to obtain from his physician information necessary for free and informed consent before any procedure or treatment
-Diagnosis
-Treatment
-Prognosis
-Financial implication
4. Right to decide on the proposed treatment
5. The right to every consideration to his privacy concerning his medical care.
6. ‘The right to the best possible economical care and to hospital management that operates efficiently and eliminates wastes, such as unnecessary services and duplication of facilities and procedure
-No clinical eye
-Dependant on gadgets or machine
-Financial implication
7. The right to obtain information concerning any relationship of his hospital to other health services, so far as his care is concerned and to the existence of any professional relationship among individuals who are treating him.
8. The right to be advised if the hospital proposed to engage in human experiment affecting his care and to refuse to participate in such research.
9. The right to reasonable continuity of care, including post discharge following.
10. The right to examine and receive explanation of his/her bill, including itemized changes. This information should be readily available regardless of the patient’s source of payment.
11. The right to know hospital rules and regulations that applies to his/her conduct as a patient.

-Abuse of right- Suicide is evil

Why should life be preserved?

Human life is sacred. It is a gift from God who is generous giver- spiritual
By the principle of stewardship we are given a shared, not an absolute dominion over our life
Disrespect to life

Why does man suffer?
-Nature is limited
-imperfect and weak
-Suffering- State off a person underlying painful or distressing feeling. It as a sign of human hopelessness.
-On a deeper spiritual level, man suffers in order to remind him of his self insufficiency on the power of his creator.

Value of suffering
-Realize of sinfulness and its consequence
-Sees the real value of things
-Makes one emphatetic to others.
-Realize the temporality of the world
-makes one prayerful
-highlights frailty of human beings.
-Develops noble virtues of man
-Distinguish the temporary from permanent values
-Draws interest to the true God.
