Dressing Materials

The functions of the dressing include:
  • Absorption of wound exudates
  • Debridement of open wounds
  • Providing a protective barrier against exogenous bacteria
  • Exertion of pressure on underlying tissues.
Various dressing materials are available, and several factors should be taken into account when choosing the appropriate dressing. 
  1. Fluffs
  2. 4 x 4s
  3. Nonadherents
  4. Moisture-vapor-permeable (MVP) transparent film
  5. Hydrocolloid dressings
  6. Polyurethane foam
  7. Skin barriers
  8. Roller gauze
  9. Tape
  10. Montgomery straps or ties
  11. Drainage bags
  12. ABDs (combines, combination pads)
